As emerged in the South Coast Shrimp Association (SCSA) forum or the South Coast Shrimp Farmers Association – Java Island some time ago. As a seminar resource person, Ahmad Rozikin, a young shrimp farmer from the South Coast of Purworejo – Central Java stated that shrimp farming, if only following habits, would potentially experience more losses. “I then implemented a nursery pond, a bit speculative because initially I saw on YouTube that there was a use of a nursery pond,” he said.
Rozikin said that he practiced more in the field, so the language used was also like a shrimp farmer. According to him, the nursery pond application will facilitate water quality management and organic materials are kept at a low concentration. Second, it is effective in the application of feed additives and probiotics as immunostimulants. Third, it reduces the risk of infection with diseases that have the potential to outbreak at the beginning of cultivation. Fourth, if a problem occurs in the early stages of cultivation, then the loss will only be at the nursery pond stage.
After being raised in the nursery pond, the shrimp are moved to the grow uut pond or rearing pond. This transfer allows the calculation of shrimp that successfully survive (survival rate post nursery) so that the number of stockings and the calculation of actual stocking density in the grow out pond are more accurate.
Shrimp after the nursery stage are stronger and ready to face changes in the pond water ecosystem. In addition, the water quality at the beginning of the enlargement segment is better because it uses new water. Unlike continuous farming/ not segmented into nursery and grow out phases, throughout the farming period, shrimp must bear the burden of increasingly heavy water conditions.
According to him, the two-step system is temporarily able to reduce the risk of problems often faced by intensive shrimp farming. It can even increase productivity on limited land because in the early phase of farming the stocking density can be very high, which is then reduced in the grow out phase. This density is adjusted to the available water quality standards. So that the initial SR (survival rate) management is more accurate.
