The Story of Fishermen Who Are Still Marginalized

Danu Waluyo Paspuyudo, a fisherman from Cilincing-Jakarta revealed that in general in the Cilincing area, fishermen are more traditional, namely small fishermen with boats below the average size of 1-4 GT. “And the majority are 3 GT,” said Danu in an online discussion TNCTalks episode 2 about ‘Measurable Fishing’ by the Tani Nelayan Center IPB University some time ago.

As a fisherman who operates a lot in the northern coastal area of Jakarta, Danu revealed the differences in the marine nature between Jakarta and other areas, causing differences in fishing techniques between Jakarta and other areas.

“This could be because of the existence of different seas, different marine nature, different technical methods, or also the existence of industrial waste which in Jakarta is different from in the region. It must be admitted here that with the presence of waste such as industrial waste, marine biota can move away from the target area or fishing zone of fishermen because the limitations are quite small for the time distance that will be traveled, there are even deaths from this waste,” said Danu.

He then hopes that the waste problem can be addressed by related agencies or the relevant government. “We hope that the problem of waste in the industry that flows through rivers and ends up in the sea. Maybe it can get special attention because apart from waste, these fishermen, small fishermen, are very bitter, especially in DKI if something happens, then it will be difficult,” he added.

Danu also admitted that he did not know what the solution would be. The difficulties he mentioned were like the season that affects whether or not fishermen go to sea. “So, in the west season for example, many switch professions from fishermen, such as scavenging for used bottles. Sometimes the TV has to be pawned even though the price is not much, the important thing is that their kitchens must smoke,” he said.
