Gourami is known as a type of freshwater fish that grows slowly. To get to consumption size, farmers need up to one year. Even so, the segmentation of the gurami culture business, starting from egg sales, seeding, to rearing is still profitable.
Gourami eggs can be sold for Rp850 per egg. Meanwhile, razor-sized seeds are sold for Rp1,000 per tail and consumption-sized gurami (live) is sold for Rp27 thousand per kg. Generally, the market for gourami fish (gurami, ed) is hotels, restaurants and cafes/catering (horeka).
It can be said that the gurami market targets the upper middle class. The demand for this type of freshwater fish in big cities such as Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Semarang, and several other big cities in the country is quite high, so that the turnover of gourami sales in Tulungagung-East Java (Jatim) can reach Rp1 billion per day.
One of the farmers who is also a Tulungagung gourami trader, Anik said, in Tulungagung there are around 30-50 gourami sellers. Some of them are also gourami farmers.
The price of dry gourami (stored in ice) is set at IDR 23 thousand – IDR 24 thousand per kg. While live gourami is priced at IDR 27 thousand per kg. Approaching Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr, gourami sales are higher compared to normal days. This is because many restaurants, eateries and hotels serve non-fasting menus with gourami.
