Although its beauty captivates many aquarium enthusiasts, the trade in dusty crayfish and other Cherax species faces a number of challenges. One of them is the frequent misidentification due to the lack of scientific standards in naming the species being marketed. In addition, exploitation of nature without any sustainable culture efforts can also threaten its native population.
Surya Gentha Akmal, a crayfish researcher from IPB University who was involved in the research on this species, emphasized that concrete steps are needed to ensure the sustainability of the trade in dusty crayfish and other Cherax species. To maintain the sustainability of the trade in dusty crayfish, the first step that must be taken is to ensure accurate scientific identification. More in-depth taxonomic research is needed so that each species in the genus Cherax can be clearly classified.
Surya Gentha Akmal emphasized the importance of this aspect in his interview. “Further research is needed to avoid misidentification. With a clearer classification, trade in this species can be more controlled and not endanger wild populations,” he said.
With a more detailed classification, misidentification in the market can be minimized, so that trade in this species is more controlled and does not threaten the balance of the ecosystem. In addition, developing culture outside its natural habitat is a very important solution. By farming dusty crayfish, market demand can be met without having to continuously catch it from the wild.
